Task 8

  1. Explain – in your own words - how the shipwreck happened. The shipwreck happened because the boat was overset by a sudden flurry from the north, due to the stormy weather. The ship went off course and crashed into a rock, which caused it to split.
  2. How would you describe Gulliver’s response to this new ‘peculiar company’?He didn’t really care about them. He only wanted to save himself and didn’t worry at all about the others.
"What became of my companions in the boat, as well as those who escaped on the rock, or were left in the vessel, I cannot tell, but conclude they were all lost."

He doesn't know what happened to the other people that were on the boat with him, but it seems like he doesn't care if they are doing okay.
  3. Further along the storyline we hear that Gulliver washed ashore on an island. Could this be a real island? Explain your answer. No, I don't think so, because the people that live there are 6 inches long, which is approximately 15 centimeters.
  4. Watch this clip of Jack Black’s adaptation of Gulliver’s Travels (only part 10:50min – 15:00min https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=opi1g-DpTEE). What similarities or differences are there? (think of methods of the author / producer, moods, experiences, characters, etc.)
I think that the similarities are that in both stories there is a shipwreck, and the character that is stranded on an island is accompanied by very tiny people. A difference is that in the film, the shipwreck is caused by the Bermuda triangle, and he is alone during the shipwreck. In the story, Lemuel Gulliver has other people on his boat, and the shipwreck is caused by a rock.
