Task 9

It was a sunny afternoon in late June. I was staying at a hotel near the beach in Portugal, with my family. My sister and I decided that it would be fun if we hired a boat, so we looked it up on the internet. "Only 20 dollar per hour!" she said while running to my mom. "Alright, but don't forget to put on suncreen!" Half an hour later we sailed away from the beach, into the tranquil ocean. Dad was steering the boat, while also looking at the map. We were going pretty fast, when suddenly we hit a gigantic rock. The boat was totally wrecked, and right after, a big wave hit us. I gasped for air, and when I came out of the water I didn't see anyone anymore. The only thing that I saw was a small island, about thirty meters away from me. I was exhausted, and when reached the island I fell right asleep. When I woke up, my skin felt burned, and my lips tasted salty. "What happened?" I thought. "Am I dreaming?". I looked around, and notic...

Task 8

Explain – in your own words - how the shipwreck happened. The shipwreck happened because the boat was overset by a sudden flurry from the north, due to the stormy weather. The ship went off course and crashed into a rock, which caused it to split. How would you describe Gulliver’s response to this new ‘peculiar company’? He didn’t really care about them. He only wanted to save himself and didn’t worry at all about the others.  " What became of my companions in the boat, as well as those who escaped on the rock, or were left in the vessel, I cannot tell, but conclude they were all lost." He doesn't know what happened to the other people that were on the boat with him, but it seems like he doesn't care if they are doing okay. Further along the storyline we hear that Gulliver washed ashore on an island. Could this be a real island? Explain your answer. No, I don't think so, because the people that live there are 6 inches long, which is  approximately 15 centimet...

Task 7

1. What mistakes does Crusoe make? He worked really hard to create his boat but when it was finished he couldn’t get it into the water. So the mistake that Crusoe made is that he worked without a plan. "But all my devices to get it into the water failed me" "But when... t/m... the other boat" 2. How does Crusoe respond to setback(s)?` He keeps trying ("Well, to take away this discouragement..") But he also feels disappointed and sad because it cost him 'infinite labour'. 3. What lesson(s) does Crusoe learn? Before we begin with something, we have to count the work it will cost us and judge our own strength if we can get through with it. You should have realistic goals and plans. 4. What message about the middle class is Defoe telling us? The middle class is the best class, since it doesn't experience extremes of luxury or poverty, and they are determined, equipped and have common sense. 5. What similarities or differences are ther...

Task 6

SONNET 132 Thine eyes I love, and they, as pitying me, Knowing thy heart torments me with disdain, Have put on black and loving mourners be, Looking with pretty ruth upon my pain. And truly not the morning sun of heaven Better becomes the grey cheeks of the east, Nor that full star that ushers in the even, Doth half that glory to the sober west, As those two mourning eyes become thy face: O! let it then as well beseem thy heart To mourn for me since mourning doth thee grace, And suit thy pity like in every part. Then will I swear beauty herself is black, And all they foul that thy complexion lack. 1. In what mood is this sonnet written? How do you know? This sonnet is written with self despair, he is pitying himself. He has 'never ending' frustrations. It's kind of a sad and dark sonnet. ("Knowing thy heart torments me with disdain") -> His heart tortures him, because his lover didn't love him back. ("And suit thy pity like in every par...
