Task 8

Explain – in your own words - how the shipwreck happened. The shipwreck happened because the boat was overset by a sudden flurry from the north, due to the stormy weather. The ship went off course and crashed into a rock, which caused it to split. How would you describe Gulliver’s response to this new ‘peculiar company’? He didn’t really care about them. He only wanted to save himself and didn’t worry at all about the others.  " What became of my companions in the boat, as well as those who escaped on the rock, or were left in the vessel, I cannot tell, but conclude they were all lost." He doesn't know what happened to the other people that were on the boat with him, but it seems like he doesn't care if they are doing okay. Further along the storyline we hear that Gulliver washed ashore on an island. Could this be a real island? Explain your answer. No, I don't think so, because the people that live there are 6 inches long, which is  approximately 15 centimet...

Task 7

1. What mistakes does Crusoe make? He worked really hard to create his boat but when it was finished he couldn’t get it into the water. So the mistake that Crusoe made is that he worked without a plan. "But all my devices to get it into the water failed me" "But when... t/m... the other boat" 2. How does Crusoe respond to setback(s)?` He keeps trying ("Well, to take away this discouragement..") But he also feels disappointed and sad because it cost him 'infinite labour'. 3. What lesson(s) does Crusoe learn? Before we begin with something, we have to count the work it will cost us and judge our own strength if we can get through with it. You should have realistic goals and plans. 4. What message about the middle class is Defoe telling us? The middle class is the best class, since it doesn't experience extremes of luxury or poverty, and they are determined, equipped and have common sense. 5. What similarities or differences are ther...

Task 6

SONNET 132 Thine eyes I love, and they, as pitying me, Knowing thy heart torments me with disdain, Have put on black and loving mourners be, Looking with pretty ruth upon my pain. And truly not the morning sun of heaven Better becomes the grey cheeks of the east, Nor that full star that ushers in the even, Doth half that glory to the sober west, As those two mourning eyes become thy face: O! let it then as well beseem thy heart To mourn for me since mourning doth thee grace, And suit thy pity like in every part. Then will I swear beauty herself is black, And all they foul that thy complexion lack. 1. In what mood is this sonnet written? How do you know? This sonnet is written with self despair, he is pitying himself. He has 'never ending' frustrations. It's kind of a sad and dark sonnet. ("Knowing thy heart torments me with disdain") -> His heart tortures him, because his lover didn't love him back. ("And suit thy pity like in every par...

Task 5

1. Would you say that the poem for his mistress is positive or negative, both? I think both positive and negative. 2. Indicate why you think this is. Because when he describes his mistress at first, it doesn't sound very positive. ("If snow be white, why then her breasts are dun, Íf hair be wires, black wires grow on her head") But later he says that his love for her is rare.

Task 4

Task 4: Tomorrow morning, I am going on a voyage to Canterbury, together with my best friend Lieke. I’m really excited and we are going to have such a great time! My name is Sanne, and I am sixteen years old. I have blond hair and green-blue eyes. The main reason that Lieke and I are going on this trip, is because we have always valued friendship a lot. We have been friends since kindergarten and our friendship means a lot to both of us. We decided it would be a great idea to honor our friendship by making this trip to Canterbury. Lieke is also sixteen, her birthday is exactly one month before mine. She looks a bit like me, but her hair is a little bit more brown. She is a sweet and caring person, and you can always rely on her. As I said, tomorrow morning we are going on a voyage together. We have strictly planned the whole trip out, since I am no fan of surprises. I am also a kind of a perfectionist, which is why I was shocked when I found out that the hotel that be booked ...

Task 3

1. What is a pilgrimage? Do you think pilgrimages still take place? A pilgrimage is a long journey made by an pilgrim. It often has a religious or spiritual purpose. They go to a sacred place, that is really important or has a special meaning to them. They do this as an act of religious devotion, and to pay their respects. I think pilgrimages still take place nowadays, and is relevant in our lives. Sure, the 'modern' pilgrimages have changed in some aspects from the traditional pilgrimages. It is probably not only about religion anymore. But people today are still traveling to go to places that they feel like they have a connection with and get inspired by. 2. Look for (at least 5) facts about Thomas Becket. - Thomas Beckett was born on December 21, 1118 (https://www.biography.com/people/st-thomas-becket-9204211) -  He was born in Cheapside, Londen (http://www.lordsandladies.org/thomas-becket.htm) - His best friend was Henry, later to become King Henry ll of England (https://ww...

Task 2

I chose the second part (lines 258 - 610) of the story: "A hero arrives" 1. Which character did you choose and why? Grendel, the evil demon that attacks the Herot and eventually fights against Beowulf. I think he (or it) is a really interesting character and also important for the story. He is different than the rest of the characters, and I am curious why he acts this way and commits all these murders. 2. Write down as many characteristics about you character as possible. Grendel is a man-eating, horrible, possessed monster demon whose gender is unknown. He is described as "insensible to pain and human sorrow". His occupation is mostly killing Danes, feed on the corpses of his victims, and attacking King Hrothgar's mead-hall every winter for twelve years long. He is merciless and will never show any remorse. His appearance is never exactly described by the narrator. 3. Write an interview and give full responses. 1) How would you describe yourself in one ...
